If you want your rooms to be interesting as well as beautiful, make
them express something, give them a theme by keeping all
ornamentation subservient to a line.

Before you buy stuff, imagine how you desire each room to look
after completion; get the picture vivid in your mind, as a painter does;
plan the main features, because all the details depend upon these and
quickly suggest themselves. This is, after all, the
quickest and also the most economical way of furnishing.

There is the theory that rooms can be created immediately, that it
has to grow gradually. In a sense this is true, when it refers to
the amateur. The professional, who is always occupied with creating and
recreating various rooms can instantly think of complete plans or themes of
decoration. The amateur can learn to mentally furnish a room. It
is an interesting pastime when one gets the grip on it.

Beautiful furniture and decor can be obtained everywhere and for a minimum price,
if you have a feeling for style and colour, or for either. If you
love beautiful decorative rooms but were not born with this artistic instinct, it can be
acquired
quickly. A decorator rearranges or creates one room; the
owner does the rest, alone, or with help, and in a season or two
has learned legitimate schemes, teaming with individuality.
You observe what you did, and are pleased with results and
may find yourself asking yourself why. Good taste has been born in you.

Treat your rooms as "still life". Make sure that each group, such as
a sofa,
table, and one or two chairs have a "composition," suggesting
comfort and beauty. Don't have an isolated chair, unless the chair is
placed against a wall, as part of your decorative theme.

One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to renew the design of your living room is to rearrange the furniture items you already own. Placing furniture can be a daunting task, regardless how big or small the room. If you are someone who always thought furniture placement would be better left to a professional interior designers, fear no more. These tips will help you enjoy the task of balancing your sofa with thecoffee table or armchair, and allow you to create harmony and balance amongst all your furniture.

Location, location, location
A room should be balanced. Specifically, the furniture in each room should be placed in an arrangement that is pleasing to the eye and easy to move around. If all your heavy furniture pieces like sofas, armchairs, entertainment centers and bookshelves are filled on one side of the room, the room can appear like a sinking ship.

On the other hand, if you scatter your furniture around the room haphazardly, the room can feel cluttered even when it is quite empty. Consider the size of your living room compared to the amount of furniture you have.

You can fix the room by situating a large entertainment center against one wall, and then arrange all seats and sofas comfortably around that anchor. You may also, anchor the sofa against a wall, place a small side table or a coffee table in front for convenience, and vola! Your room is balanced.

Sofa Secrets
Using a sofa as an anchor, or as the center point for your living room can be an effective furniture placement tool. Remember, modular sofas, or sofas with many components, can be too much of an anchor, tipping the balance of the room with its bulkiness. The creative solution to this problem is found in breaking up the pieces of the sofa.

Place your largest sofa piece against the longest wall, then the smaller sections on the opposite side. When you have the smaller sections of a modular sofa face the long sofa at an angle, you avoid that boring, boxy look that comes from having all furniture pieces pressed with their backs straight against the wall.

A good alternative to placing a sofa against the longest wall is to bring the sofa out, free from the wall. If you like this look and feel better for your sofa placement, let at least two and a half to three feet be between the sofa and the wall for good and comfortable walking space. Less space is needed between the chairs and a sofa, but do keep in mind walking patterns.

It is good to go with the flow. Imagine that you and your guests walk in your living room with all the furniture in its new place. For example, if there are 2 doors, you may want to place sofas and chairs in a way that will allow passersby to maneuver behind or around the seating arrangement and not through it.

If there is only one door to a room, don't block the flow with a large coffee table right in front of the sofa. Make sure you provide easy access directly to the sofa & chairs from the door, making some space around the seating areas as well is good.

Large living rooms can be designed so that they function well as two areas. Try to have one social, entertainment center seating arrangement in one area, and a quiet study arrangement in the another. Some tall side tables can be positioned behind a sofa with decorative looking vases and pictures on the top, as long as there is some walking space behind your couch.

When you decide on how to arrange your living room furniture, feel and follow your instincts. Wait decorating the walls for a few days or up to a week once you have decided where you want to put each piece of furniture, giving yourself a chance to get used to a new placement. Live with the new arrangement, and think about how you feel. If something doesn't feel right, you just move it to a new placement, and use some of the tips here to help you bringing the living room into balance.
